Wegovy (semaglutide) is an FDA-approved drug in a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s for short).
Wegovy acts like a natural hormone your body uses to regulate blood sugar and appetite—key steps in resetting your biological set point to help you maintain a new, lower weight.
Wegovy is clinically proven to help with weight loss. In a clinical trial, people who combined Wegovy with lifestyle changes lost an average of 14-15% of their body weight on average in 1 year.* Learn more about Wegovy and weight loss.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide—the same active ingredient as the Wegovy pen—but is designed to be taken orally.
Here are the similarities between the pen and the pill:
Weight loss results: The average weight loss in one year is 14% with the pill and 15% with the pen.
Active ingredient: The active ingredient in both Wegovy pill and Wegovy pen is semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic.
Dosing: Both medications start at a low dose, and the dose is gradually increased over time based on your individual needs and goals.
Side effects: Side effects are similar across both medications, and through Ro, you can reach out to a provider to help manage them.
The main differences between the pill and the pen are how they’re administered and how often you take them:
The Wegovy pen is an injection administered once a week.
The Wegovy pill is taken by mouth every day.

*Based on study of Wegovy 2.4 mg in non-diabetics with obesity, or with overweight plus a weight-related condition, when paired with healthy lifestyle changes. Average weight loss in 1 year is 15% (compared to 2.4% with diet and exercise alone).
Safety info: GLP-1 medications are used to treat obesity or overweight (with weight-related problems), along with diet and exercise. They may have serious side effects, including possible thyroid tumors. Do not use if you or your family have a history of a type of thyroid cancer called MTC or MEN 2. From personalized treatment to insurance support, we help you get—and stay—on track.
Answer a few questions about your health and goals, all online—no in-person doctor’s office visit necessary. You’ll find out if you’re eligible within 2 days.
A provider will review your info and prescribe the right GLP-1 treatment for you, if eligible. Get ready for your first dose in two weeks if using insurance, or less than a week if paying cash.
Ro checks your insurance to see if GLP-1 coverage is available. If you require prior authorization, Ro's insurance concierge fights for coverage and submits all paperwork on your behalf. If you're covered, a prescription is sent to your pharmacy. If not, your provider will suggest alternative FDA-approved cash pay GLP-1 options. This process takes about 2-3 weeks.
If paying cash, your medication ships right to your door and you can take your first dose in less than a week. If using insurance, your medication can be picked up at your pharmacy.
Keep making progress with regular check-ins, expert guidance, and access to your care team 24/7. Ongoing care and support is there for you when you need it—whether it’s a quick chat with your provider or routine check-ins, we’re with you every step of the way.

We hear all the time that weight loss depends on willpower. And that’s just not true. Obesity is a disease, not a decision. Being overweight is about the biology of your body. There are steps that you can take to put science on your side. And we know how.
