FAQ
Garlic is the bulb of the plant Allium sativum. It is related to onions and is eaten worldwide as a vegetable and as a spice that can be added to food. Deodorized garlic bulb powder is a powder that is made out of an aged garlic bulb. The cells of garlic contain a substance called alliin, which turns into a compound called allicin when the cells are crushed. Researchers measure the activity of garlic based on how much allicin the garlic is able to produce (1).
Garlic has been used as traditional medicine by cultures around the world, including by the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Japanese, Native Americans, and Romans. Its purported uses include fighting infection, improving heart disease, preventing certain types of cancers, and functioning as an antioxidant (1).
While many studies have looked into the health benefits of garlic, they have mostly been small or poorly designed. As a result, it is difficult to draw firm conclusions about the actual benefits of garlic supplementation.
One study in 120 people showed that garlic may have beneficial effects on the immune system. After 90 days, the study participants who received supplementation with 2,560 mg per day of garlic extract were noted to have reduced severity of symptoms of the common cold and the flu compared to the participants who did not receive supplementation (2).
Deodorized garlic bulb powder also has the following health benefits, which is why it was chosen to be an ingredient in the Roman Dailies: Heart Health.
Garlic has been shown to be beneficial for heart health in two main areas:
Lowering blood pressure: In one study on patients with uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure), the group that was taking 480 mg per day of aged garlic extract for 12 weeks was found to have an average reduction in their systolic blood pressure of 11.8±5.4 mmHg (4).
Lowering cholesterol: In one review of 39 studies, supplementation for at least two months led to a reduction in total cholesterol by 17±6 mg/dL and a reduction in LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) by 9±6 mg/dL. This benefit was seen in individuals who had elevated total cholesterol levels of >200 mg/dL. No significant changes were seen in HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) or triglycerides (5).
Nutritional supplements, like deodorized garlic bulb powder, are not reviewed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. The effective daily dose can therefore only be estimated based on what has been tested in studies. Most studies use a dosage of 600–1,200 mg per day.
Garlic is available in multiple forms to be added to food, including as fresh or whole garlic, garlic powder, and garlic oil. When it is formulated into a supplement, garlic powder is available in either tablet or capsule form. Some companies offer aged garlic extract, which is a deodorized form of garlic powder.
