For too long, people with obesity have been stigmatized, misled about the most effective ways to improve their health, and unable to get the care and support they need. Building on Ro’s experience helping more than 160,000 people with Plenity, we introduced the Body Program to offer people a new effective and convenient way to achieve their weight and metabolic health goals.

Despite what people may assume or have heard, difficulty losing weight is often not due to a lack of effort, motivation, or self-control. Even following evidence-based nutrition and exercise programs is commonly not enough to lose weight and/or keep it off.

Obesity is a chronic condition. Because it is a chronic condition, people’s biologies can make it really challenging to address through sheer will alone. Fortunately, there are new obesity treatments available called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which can help people lose 15% of their body weight over the course of a year when paired with healthy lifestyle changes.

The Body Program uniquely combines access to GLP-1 treatment along with everything needed to help make it most effective, including expert provider care, ongoing coaching from nurses, diagnostic testing, remote monitoring, and an educational curriculum.

Here’s how the program works.

Step 1: Getting to know each patient

Patients start their experience with Ro by completing a Body Program online visit detailing their health history and goals. These answers help their medical provider learn more about each patient’s individual needs and if they might benefit from prescription obesity treatment.

Step 2: Personalizing a treatment plan

Patients then have a consultation with their medical provider to discuss if prescription obesity treatment is safe and appropriate. This consultation is an opportunity for providers to ask or answer any further questions as well as to set expectations about the efficacy and potential side effects of treatment. Together, the patient and provider then map out a personalized treatment plan.

For those who are prescribed a GLP-1 medication, Ro’s insurance concierge partner connects with each patient’s insurance company to help get the cost of the medication covered. Navigating insurance approvals can be incredibly confusing and time-consuming for patients, so we take on that complexity and notify them when their prescription is approved.

Step 3: Taking the journey together

Treatment with a GLP-1 medication is just the beginning of each patient’s Body Program journey. Each patient is guided through their care plan with supportive, one-on-one coaching by a registered nurse. The nurse can help patients understand how to make the most of the program, and a step-by-step educational curriculum accompanies their guidance. Each week, patients can learn from content covering important topics such as nutrition, sleep, exercise, lifestyle changes, and more to help them set up long-term healthy habits.

As patients progress, they schedule regular visits with their provider to discuss prescription renewal, progress and satisfaction with treatment, challenges or side effects, and whatever else they would like to check-in on.
