Before July 2026, some Humana Medicare plans covered Wegovy for heart disease or fatty liver disease. Now, a temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge has expanded Wegovy coverage to include weight loss for eligible beneficiaries.

An important note: As of publication, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is scheduled to end on December 31, 2027. It's not known whether Humana — or other Medicare plans — will cover Wegovy after that.

Does Humana cover Wegovy for weight loss?

Yes, as of July 1, 2026, Humana's Medicare plans cover the Wegovy pill and injection for weight loss. This is possible throughthe Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a time-limited program that ends December 31, 2027.

To be eligible for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, you must be enrolled in Medicare Part D through:​

• A standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP)

• A Medicare Advantage coordinated care plan with drug coverage (MA-PD)

• A Special Needs Plan (SNP)

• An employer/union group waiver plan (EGWP)

• The Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition (LI NET) program

You must also meet one of the following criteria:

• Have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more

• Have a BMI of 30 or more with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled hypertension, or chronic kidney disease (stage 3a or higher)

• Have a BMI of 27 or more with prediabetes, symptomatic peripheral artery disease, or a history of heart attack or stroke

Does Humana cover Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction?

Sometimes. If you have obesity or overweight and heart disease, a Humana Medicare Part D plan may cover your Wegovy prescription.

If you're prescribed Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction, it's important to understand that Wegovy would be covered through your Part D plan, not the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. (Good news: That also means your coverage wouldn't potentially end on December 31, 2027.)

The 2026 Humana Medicare Employer Plan Formulary classifies Wegovy as a Tier 4 medication that requires prior authorization. (More on that below.)

Does Humana cover Wegovy for fatty liver disease?

Sometimes. If you're prescribed the Wegovy shot to treat noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a type of fatty liver disease, your Humana Medicare Part D plan may cover it. (The pill isn't FDA-approved for liver health.)

Again, you'd get Wegovy coverage for fatty liver through a Part D plan, not the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. And Wegovy for fatty liver disease is still a Tier 4 medication, meaning it would have a high copay and require prior authorization.

Yes, Humana plans that cover Wegovy typically require prior authorization. Most insurance providers (e.g. Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, and Aetna) require prior authorization for specialized or high-cost medications such as Wegovy, Zepbound (tirzepatide), and Ozempic (semaglutide).

Prior authorization — also called "coverage determination" for Medicare plans — means your healthcare provider needs to submit documentation that you meet specific coverage criteria before Humana will cover the prescription.

There are a few quick ways to know if your Humana plan covers Wegovy:

• Check your Humana plan's drug formulary. This list includes the medications your plan covers. Find it by logging into your Humana account and searching for Wegovy. If it's covered, the formulary will also show the drug tier (the higher the tier, the higher the copay) and whether Wegovy requires prior authorization (marked "PA").

• Call Humana. Call the number on the back of your health insurance card to speak to a customer service representative about which drugs are covered under your policy.

• Cost of Wegovy if Humana does cover it: Your cost for Wegovy depends on your plan's drug formulary, copay, and deductible. (Manufacturer savings cards, like NovoCare's $25 per month offer, are reserved for commercial insurance and can't be used with Medicare, so they won't lower a Humana Medicare copay.)

• Cost of Wegovy under Medicare Part D: If your Wegovy prescription is covered through a Humana Medicare Part D plan, your cost will vary by plan. Wegovy is typically categorized as Tier 4. (Your Humana insurance card may list your plan's copay for each tier.)

• Cost of Wegovy through Medicare GLP-1 Bridge: If your Humana plan makes you eligible for Wegovy coverage through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, you'll have a $50 monthly copay.

• Appeal Humana's decision. Your healthcare provider can request Humana to reconsider for up to 65 days after a coverage denial. Talk to your healthcare provider right away if you want them to submit a redetermination request.

• See if you qualify for a different GLP-1.If Humana won't cover Wegovy for weight loss, ask your healthcare provider about Zepbound or Foundayo (orforglipron), which are also covered through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. Some Humana plans may cover Ozempic or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) if you have type 2 diabetes, and coverage can vary between the Wegovy injection and pill, so check your formulary for both.
