By now, even if you’ve only seen the headlines, you know that Wegovy (semaglutide) produces impressive weight loss results—up to 16% in less than two years. But what does taking Wegovy feel like? For that information, you’ll want to read Wegovy reviews from real people taking Wegovy.

Below, we’ve gathered Wegovy reviews from the internet, Reddit, and real patients at Ro. We’ve also talked to physicians who work with people taking Wegovy and highlighted key information you’ll want to know before starting Wegovy, including typical side effects and cost.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable medication that may be prescribed for weight loss or long-term weight management in people with obesity or with overweight and a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. It can also be prescribed to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in people with heart disease and obesity or overweight.  Wegovy should be taken in combination with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.

Wegovy works for weight loss by mimicking a hormone naturally produced by your gut called glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1 for short. This hormone plays a role in controlling your blood sugar levels and your appetite, slowing down digestion and telling your brain when you’re full, so you stop eating.

Naturally, GLP-1 only stays active for a few minutes, but semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy) lasts much longer, prolonging those effects so you experience a reduced appetite, fewer cravings, and weight loss. Thanks to Wegovy’s long half-life, you only need to inject it once a week.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially approved injectable semaglutide for type 2 diabetes in 2017, under the brand name Ozempic. In 2019, an oral tablet version of semaglutide, Rybelsus, was approved for type 2 diabetes. As researchers discovered the drug’s effectiveness in lowering body weight, the drugmaker Novo Nordisk sought additional approval for semaglutide in higher dosages specifically for weight loss.

This higher-strength version of the drug was named Wegovy, and became FDA-approved in 2021. In 2024, both versions of semaglutide were approved to lower cardiovascular risk in their respective treatment populations (people with heart disease and type 2 diabetes for Ozempic, and people with obesity or overweight and heart disease for Wegovy). In January 2025, the FDA approved another new indication for Ozempic: to reduce the risk of certain complications in people with kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.

Today, researchers continue to explore potential new benefits of semaglutide, including in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and Alzheimer’s disease. In the future, it’s possible we’ll see new approved indications for Wegovy and Ozempic, or perhaps an altogether new version of semaglutide with a different brand name.

Wegovy reviews: what the studies say

Sometimes the best “reviews” are clinical studies done on a medication. Here’s a quick overview of the research that shows how much weight you can lose on Wegovy.

A clinical trial of over 1,900 adults with obesity or overweight (but without diabetes) found that:

  • Those taking Wegovy lost 14.9% of their body weight in 68 weeks (about a year and a half). By comparison, those taking a placebo lost less than 3%.

  • The Wegovy users lost an average of 33.7 pounds, while those taking a placebo lost less than 6 pounds.

  • Wegovy users also experienced greater improvements in other aspects of their metabolic health, including reductions in their waist circumference, blood pressure, and cholesterol. They also reported improved physical functioning.

A review of eight randomized controlled trials, with a total of over 4,500 patients, found that Wegovy significantly reduced, compared to placebo:

  • Body weight by an average of 10% more

  • Waist circumference by about 3 inches more

  • Body mass index (BMI) by 3.71 points more

Other studies show that Wegovy starts working quickly for weight loss, with people losing nearly 6% within the first three months of taking Wegovy, and nearly 11% within the first six months.

When taken for heart disease, a clinical trial of over 17,600 adults found that Wegovy reduced their risk of experiencing a major cardiovascular event—including stroke, heart attack, or death—by 20%. They also experienced an average 10.2% weight loss over 4 years and shaved 3 inches off their waistlines.

Online Wegovy reviews

Online reviews of Wegovy are generally positive, with people raving about the weight loss and finding ways to manage the side effects. Highlights include curbed appetite, weight loss, and other improvements to their health. Downsides usually focus on side effects—such as nausea and diarrhea—but often include advice for dealing with them.

At the time of writing, Wegovy has an average rating of 7.5 out of 10 on drugs.com, based on 437 reviews. Here’s what some reviewers had to say, after taking the weight loss injection for at least one month to over a year:

“Wegovy has absolutely curbed my appetite at the 0.25 dose. I definitely do not feel nearly as hungry as I used to. I will eat maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of what used to be a normal portion for me and get signals to stop. It has not made me sick at all, unlike other reviews. I think it's a real godsend for me with COVID and menopausal weight gain."

“6 months. -65 pounds. Hypertension gone. Pre-Diabetes gone. Sleep apnea gone. Lower leg skin breakdown gone. Slow progress now. I must fight the return of old eating habits. Wegovy is not for wimps. But if you really want to lose weight, this is the way to go. This is like bariatric surgery in a small needle.”

“I have had very minimal side effects in the 5 weeks I've been on it (lost 9.5 pounds). The side effects I get are headaches if I don't drink enough water - WATER IS KEY - and nausea if I don't eat enough protein. Five small protein-based meals a day seem to do the trick. Have not suffered any of the other things people talk about. I've noticed my clothes are more loose fitting than a 9-pound weight loss would normally warrant. Everyone is different - and people tend to post complaints more than praises... so don't get too stressed assuming you'll have side effects. Most people don't. I'm glad I'm on this journey."

“I started at a size XXL/pants size 16 and 213 lbs. After a little over a year, I am now 125 lbs and a size small/pants size 2. This drug literally reset my entire body chemistry and metabolism. I never dieted nor exercised the past year. I don’t want to lose any more weight, so I just went down to a 1 mg half dose to maintain my weight loss. I am so grateful for this medicine!”

“Starting week 9 with the second injection of 1 mg. I have lost 24 pounds in 8 weeks. The side effects happen about 3 - 4 days a week. The first weekend on 0.25 mg was the worst!...You have to stay positive and just buy meds that will help with side effects because the side effects will probably always happen a couple of days a week."

Wegovy reviews: Reddit

You can find Wegovy reviews throughout several Reddit communities, especially on the r/WegovyWeightLoss and r/Semaglutide subreddits. Here, people taking the medication often share their results, cheer each other on, and offer advice for managing side effects. It is also common for those who are considering taking Wegovy to visit these subreddits to hear about other people’s experiences.

For example, Reddit user A_flight_away asked, “How much weight have you lost with Wegovy and was it everything you hoped for?”

Several users shared their Wegovy reviews in response:

“I'm down 102 (22%) pounds in 22 weeks. I'm looking to lose another 100 pounds in the next 7 months. It's been a great ride, I have basically no side effects. I like to tell people I've found the magic skinny pill - I eat what I want until I'm Thanksgiving full every day and wake up skinnier.” — WasabiParty4285

“Down 27lbs (started 1/31) and I just had a cardiologist visit this week (CHF patient)…since my last visit 1 year ago, I’ve dropped 30lbs total, BP is now in the normal range (110/79), labs were great, kidney function is perfect, and they even stopped one of my heart meds since I’m doing so well. I have nothing to complain about w/Wegovy tbh” — kimmetry

“It is miraculous! I’m on week 17 and down 25 lbs. I stayed with 1.0 for 2 months as I had my first bouts of unpleasant stomach flu symptoms in the first 2 weeks of 1.0 but it settled down. 1.7 has been a breeze and I look forward to go finally reaching the 2.4 “ therapeutic dose”.

It has been a process of mostly minor side effects like fatigue, sulphur burps, heartburn etc. that I have learned to handle - mainly through shared insights in this Reddit thread. I feel so fortunate that this medicine exists and my insurance covers it! I’ve always known I can lose weight but now I feel confident I will keep it off and stop the yo-yoing.” — poidog1551

Healthcare provider reviews of Wegovy

Those prescribing Wegovy often deal with many different types of patients and reactions to medications, so we asked several healthcare providers to share their perspectives. Many highlighted the weight loss success their clients are now enjoying with Wegovy, especially when they commit to other lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.

Wegovy has been a game-changer for many of my patients struggling with obesity,” says Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, a quadruple board-certified doctor of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. “I’ve seen substantial weight loss, often leading to better control of blood sugar, reduced blood pressure, and even improvements in joint pain due to less strain on the body. It’s not a magic fix, but when combined with healthy habits, the results can be life-changing for some.”

Healthcare providers also commented on how their patients’ Wegovy-assisted weight loss led to other improvements in their health. “Patients often tell me they feel fuller for longer and experience fewer cravings, making it easier to stick to healthier eating habits,” says Hussain Ahmad, MUDr/MD, a hospital doctor and consultant practitioner in the UK.  “Beyond the numbers on the scale, I’ve noticed better mobility, improved energy levels, and even increased confidence in some patients.”

But while many patients have very positive results, not every person will be a great fit for Wegovy. “That said, it’s not for everyone. Some experience side effects like nausea, and it requires a long-term commitment. But for those who tolerate it well and stay consistent, the benefits can be life-changing,” explains Dr. Ahmad.

According to  Paul Rosenberg, MD, Head Plastic Surgeon at the New Jersey Breast Reduction Center, Wegovy can also be an effective tool in helping patients reach a healthy body weight before undergoing certain surgical procedures, such as breast reduction or bariatric surgery.

“For my patients, Wegovy has made perhaps the biggest impact on improving the outcome of any of the preoperative planning tools I use in my body contouring patients,” says Dr. Rosenberg. “With Wegovy, a patient can lose exactly the needed amount of weight under our direct and close supervision and reach a safe BMI to undergo the life-changing plastic surgical procedure that brings them finally back to the gym.”

Some providers we contacted had firsthand experience with Wegovy themselves, including Gena Harrison, MD, a family medicine doctor and internist at Corewell Health in Detroit, Michigan.

“My experience with Wegovy was a transformative one, driven by a deeply personal goal as I prepared my body for the best possible chance at conceiving through IVF. Like many individuals facing fertility challenges, I recognized that achieving a healthy weight could significantly improve my chances of success,” explained Dr. Harrison. ”However, the weight loss process can be daunting, especially when time is a factor. With Wegovy, I was able to lose 35 pounds in just three months, meeting my weight-loss goal efficiently and safely. More importantly, I kept the weight off for over a year, demonstrating the sustainability of Wegovy’s results.”

Like Dr. Dasgupta, Dr. Harrison described Wegovy as a “game-changer” for her patients. “As a prescriber, Wegovy has been a game-changer for my patients looking to improve their health. One of the most significant benefits is its cardioprotective properties—helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Many of my patients have seen marked improvements in their metabolic health, with some being able to reduce or even discontinue medications for conditions like hypertension and type 2 diabetes after losing weight,” says Dr. Harrison.

As a registered dietitian in Newport Beach, California, Dalia Beydoun, MS, RD counsels many people throughout their weight loss journey, some of whom are taking Wegovy.

“When doing body composition analyses, I've seen significant body fat loss, with less muscle loss than you would expect, especially for people who engage in resistance exercise. Some people also see improvements in blood sugar and better diabetes control, which makes sense given how this medication works,” says Beydoun. “That said, the GI side effects like nausea and early fullness have been an issue for some people…which isn’t ideal or recommended long term, as it can increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies. But overall, when paired with adequate nutrition support and a solid exercise plan, Wegovy can make sustainable changes feel more achievable.”

Wegovy reviews: patients on Wegovy at Ro

If you’re looking for a convenient way to access Wegovy, Ro offers GLP1 medication if you qualify after speaking with a healthcare provider entirely online. Below are real patients at Ro who took Wegovy. These reviews were collected from real Ro members through our usual feedback process. Some may have received compensation for their authentic opinions.

“So I was very much an emotional eater or a bored eater…but after starting Wegovy, I am very much not worried about what I'm having for dinner or, what snack I can snack on because I'm bored…The food noise has completely silenced, and that's definitely the one aspect that I really enjoy, because I could just focus on a bunch of other things that is not food.” — Whittnie B.

“So what I would say to someone who's actually on the fence about joining the Ro program or getting on the GLP-1s? ...I would tell them my results. I would say I went from 305-10 pounds to now I'm 250. I still have a ways to go, but…it's made it actually possible where before I was struggling so much.” — Jonathan G.

What to know before taking Wegovy

Before you take Wegovy—or any prescription medication, for that matter—it’s good to be aware of the side effects, contraindications, and cost.

Wegovy side effects

As you may have gathered from the reviews, the most common side effects of Wegovy are gastrointestinal in nature. For most people, these range from mild to moderate in intensity, and are most common when starting treatment and increasing your dose. Here’s a full list of Wegovy’s common side effects:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Abdominal pain

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

  • Indigestion

  • Dizziness

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Belching

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in people taking certain diabetes medications

  • Flatulence

  • Stomach flu

  • Heartburn

  • Common cold

While rare, Wegovy can also cause serious side effects, such as:

  • Acute pancreatitis

  • Acute gallbladder disease

  • Severe hypoglycemia

  • Acute kidney injury

  • Severe gastrointestinal reactions

  • Allergic reactions

  • Diabetic retinopathy complications in people with type 2 diabetes

  • Heart rate increase

  • Suicidal thoughts and behavior

  • Pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or surgical procedures

Who shouldn’t take Wegovy?

Some people should not take Wegovy, including anyone who is pregnant or has severe gastroparesis, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). You should also not take Wegovy if you have a known allergy to semaglutide or any of the drug’s inactive ingredients, which may include disodium phosphate dihydrate, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, or sodium hydroxide.

Because Wegovy slows digestion, it can affect the absorption of other oral medications. Prior to starting Wegovy, it’s important to share a full list of all medications and supplements with your healthcare provider.

If you take insulin or insulin secretagogues, you may be more likely to experience hyperglycemia (low blood sugar) when taking Wegovy. Your healthcare provider may advise you on how to lower your dose of insulin or other diabetes medications to reduce this risk.

Wegovy cost

We won’t beat around the bush: Wegovy can be expensive. Without insurance or discounts, Wegovy costs $1,590–$1,781 for a one-month supply, according to SingleCare. If your insurance covers Wegovy, you’ll likely pay far less than that.

And, you may be eligible for the Wegovy Savings Offer from Novo Nordisk. Depending on your insurance coverage, this Wegovy coupon can help you get Wegovy for $650 or completely free. Restrictions apply, including for people with government-funded insurance plans like Medicare or Medicaid, who are not eligible for the offer.

If you’re not eligible for the Wegovy Savings Offer, you can still save on the cost of Wegovy with drug discount cards. You can find these cards on websites like SingleCare, GoodRx, and Optum Perks. They’re free to download and can be presented to your pharmacist when you pick up your Rx for a discount.

Bottom line

Based on the reviews of Wegovy, it’s clear that this medication offers significant benefits for weight loss and metabolic health. However, like any prescription medication, it comes with potential side effects and other things to consider, like a high out-of-pocket cost. If you're thinking about starting Wegovy, here are the main takeaways from the research and reviews:

  • Clinical studies confirm significant weight loss and heart health benefits with Wegovy. Research shows that Wegovy users lose an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, with some losing over 30 pounds. Clinical trials also found that Wegovy reduces cardiovascular risk by 20% in people with obesity and heart disease.

  • Many Wegovy users report a dramatically reduced appetite, leading to steady and sustained weight loss. Wegovy reviews from real patients often describe the experience as life-changing, with some losing over 100 pounds. However, side effects like nausea and fatigue are common, and users recommend strategies like staying hydrated and adjusting their diets to manage them.

  • Healthcare providers report significant health benefits in their patients beyond weight loss. Physicians and dietitians treating Wegovy users have observed not only weight loss but also better blood sugar control, lower blood pressure, and improved mobility. As a result, some of their patients have been able to taper off or discontinue other medications they were taking. Always consult your provider before stopping prescription medications.

  • Lifestyle changes are key to long-term success on Wegovy. While Wegovy can be a powerful tool for weight loss, providers and patients alike stress that it works best when combined with mindful eating and regular physical activity. Those who achieve lasting results often approach it as a long-term lifestyle shift rather than a quick fix.
