So, you just started taking Wegovy (semaglutide), and now you’re finding yourself tossing and turning more at night. As you’re crossing off potential causes, you may start to wonder: Does Wegovy cause insomnia?

While insomnia isn’t a listed side effect of the drug, a minority of people report difficulty falling or staying asleep while taking the medication for weight loss

Let’s take a closer look at what research says about Wegovy insomnia, why it might happen, and what you can do to get better sleep during your Wegovy journey.

Does Wegovy cause insomnia?

Insomnia isn’t considered a common side effect of Wegovy, and most people taking the medication don’t experience sleep issues. 

In fact, it’s not listed as an expected or reported side effect on the drug’s prescribing information (PI). But that doesn’t mean sleep disturbances can’t occur while taking Wegovy — or that people won’t experience them. 

Here’s what data suggests:

  • In a clinical trial, 2.4% of people taking semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy) reported sleep disturbances. But so did 2.4% of the people taking a placebo. And when a side effect occurs at a similar rate in the drug and placebo groups, it’s less likely to be caused by that drug alone. 

  • An analysis of social media posts mentioning semaglutide and other GLP-1s found that some users said their sleep worsened on semaglutide while others said it improved. 

  • A study of the self-reported side effects of people taking GLP-1s, including semaglutide, found that insomnia was the most common psychiatric side effect, accounting for approximately 11.7% psych-related effects. But it was still less than 1% of all side effects. 

It’s worth noting that research is ongoing, and plenty of other patients report feeling tired on Wegovy. In fact, fatigue is listed on the drug’s PI. But when it comes to Wegovy and insomnia, the verdict is still TBD.

How can Wegovy cause insomnia or sleep problems?

There isn’t any evidence to suggest that Wegovy directly causes insomnia or that it’s a common experience while taking the GLP-1. But people do say it happens. So, why? Issues falling or staying asleep on Wegovy likely have to do with the drug’s side effects. 

Gastrointestinal discomfort 

Wegovy slows digestion, helping you feel fuller longer. While this can lead you to eat less and ultimately lose weight, it can also cause gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. In fact, some of the most common Wegovy side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain and bloating.

Depending on what you ate and when, these symptoms can be more noticeable at night. Think of it this way: The bigger the meal and the closer to bedtime you eat, the more likely you may be to feel overly full, nauseated, and uncomfortable when hitting the hay.

And if you’ve ever tried to fall asleep with a gurgling gut, an urge to run to the bathroom, or general GI discomfort, then you know how easily it can lead to restless (or even no) zzz’s. The good news? Wegovy side effects tend to be temporary and typically occur at the beginning of treatment and when increasing your dose. 

So, if you’re dealing with Wegovy insomnia, you can relax (or at least try to relax) knowing you should be back to sleeping soundly once your body adjusts to the medication. 

Heartburn or acid reflux 

When food stays in your stomach longer (as it does on Wegovy), stomach acid can linger along with it, which can increase the chance of reflux or heartburn. So, it makes sense that acid reflux is also considered a common side effect of Wegovy.

Unfortunately, this upper GI symptom can feel worse at night. That’s because lying down can make it easier for that acid to travel back up toward your esophagus, triggering the burning or discomfort that can keep you awake.

Headaches

In clinical trials, 14% of people taking 2.4 mg of Wegovy reported headaches as a side effect. 

Like other common side effects of the drug, headaches tend to be temporary. However, they can still mess with your sleep. In fact, research shows a link between pain and sleep issues: Pain can disrupt sleep, and poor sleep can worsen pain. 

Low blood sugar 

Going to bed hungry or experiencing overnight blood sugar dips can make it harder to sleep. Because Wegovy lowers blood sugar levels, it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially when combined with other glucose-lowering medications like insulin in people with diabetes.

Hypoglycemia can lead to dizziness, confusion, and a rapid heart rate — all of which can disrupt sleep. 

Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking that may lower your blood sugar before you start Wegovy. They may adjust your doses to help avoid this side effect.

Hormone changes

Wegovy works by mimicking GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate appetite, digestion, and blood sugar. Some early research suggests that GLP-1 may also interact with parts of the brain tied to sleep and circadian rhythms, though this hasn’t been confirmed in people taking Wegovy. 

So while it’s possible that these hormonal shifts play a role in sleep changes, scientists are still working to understand the connection.

Anxiety or psychological factors

Starting a new medication, especially one that affects your appetite and how your body feels, can be stressful. It’s normal to feel a little on edge when you’re not sure what to expect or when your body is going through changes.

And since anxiety and sleep problems tend to go hand in hand, any extra stress during this time could make it harder to wind down at night. 

Clinical trials showed that anxiety rates were about the same in people taking semaglutide and those taking a placebo. So, it doesn’t appear to be a direct effect of the drug. But the adjustment period itself can be enough to throw off your sleep for a bit. 

How long do sleep problems or insomnia on Wegovy last? 

There haven’t been any studies specifically on Wegovy and insomnia, so we can’t definitively say how long sleep problems on Wegovy may last. In general, Wegovy’s side effects tend to be most noticeable early on or after a dose increase, and often become less intense as the body adjusts.

Research shows most people recover from GI side effects like nausea and diarrhea within about six weeks. So if your sleep troubles are tied to those side effects, there’s a good chance they’ll improve as the side effects settle down. That said, if you’re still struggling to sleep after several weeks,  it’s a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider.

How common are sleep problems or insomnia on Wegovy?

Since there haven’t been any studies on Wegovy’s direct impact on sleep, it’s unclear how common sleep problems are with the drug. 

As mentioned above, insomnia hasn’t been shown to be a common side effect of Wegovy. In one clinical trial, 2.4% of people taking semaglutide reported insomnia. But so did 2.4% of people taking a placebo. So, it’s unlikely that sleep issues were directly caused by the GLP-1. 

More research is needed to truly understand the potential connection between Wegovy and insomnia. 

How to manage insomnia on Wegovy: 5 ways to sleep (and feel) better

If you’re experiencing Wegovy insomnia, there are a few strategies that can help you get better rest.

Adjust meal timing and what you eat

It’s a good idea not to go to bed starving or overly full. Eating heavy, fatty meals in the evening can affect your sleep just as much as hunger pangs.   

Eating balanced meals earlier in the evening and avoiding heavy, fatty, or spicy foods right before bed can help reduce reflux and nausea. (After all, research shows that heavy meals close to bedtime can negatively affect your sleep, even if you’re not taking Wegovy.)  

Pro tips: Staying upright for some time after a large meal and elevating the head of your bed can also help improve heartburn.

Create and keep a consistent sleep schedule

Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can help regulate your body’s internal clock. Meaning, it can help tell your body when it’s time to wind down — naturally. 

In addition to a consistent bedtime, other sleep hygiene practices can also improve your sleep in the long term. These include limiting light exposure in the evening, cutting screen time, calming your mind and body with relaxation exercises or a warm bath in the evening, and limiting daytime napping.  

Avoid caffeine close to bedtime 

If you’re having trouble sleeping on Wegovy (or in general, for that matter), it’s worth avoiding caffeine close to bedtime. Caffeine can make it harder to fall asleep and may lead to more fragmented sleep, especially when consumed in the afternoon or evening. 

In one study, caffeine taken even six hours before bed significantly disrupted sleep. Another study found that higher doses had a bigger impact the closer they were taken to bedtime.

Limit alcohol

Alcohol may make you feel sleepy at first, but it can interfere with the quality of your sleep later on. In one study, drinking alcohol before bed reduced REM sleep, while other research found that alcohol within four hours of bedtime was linked to less time asleep. 

If Wegovy-related nausea, reflux, or stomach discomfort is already bothering you at night, alcohol may make it harder to get restful sleep or settle back down after waking.

When to contact a healthcare provider 

Occasional restless nights happen, but it’s a good idea to reach out to your healthcare provider if:

  • Insomnia lasts more than a few weeks

  • Sleep problems are severe or getting worse

  • You have persistent nausea or reflux at night

  • You feel dizzy, shaky, or have signs of low blood sugar

  • Loss of sleep is affecting your mood, work, or daily life

Your provider can help determine whether these symptoms are related to Wegovy or something else and suggest strategies to help. 

Bottom line

Insomnia isn’t considered a common side effect of Wegovy, and clinical data doesn’t list it as a major adverse effect. Still, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Insomnia is not listed as a side effect of Wegovy on the drug’s prescribing information. However, some people still report sleep issues while taking the GLP-1. 

  • If experienced, insomnia could be caused by Wegovy’s side effects, not the medication itself. Gastrointestinal problems, such as nausea, reflux, and diarrhea, can all make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. 

  • Other potential indirect causes of sleep issues include low blood sugar and headaches. 

  • Simple lifestyle changes can help address sleep issues much of the time. Creating and keeping a consistent nighttime routine, avoiding large, heavy meals before bed, and cutting back on alcohol and caffeine can all improve sleep quality both on and off Wegovy.
