Nearly six million Sunshine State residents have insurance through Florida Blue. If you’re one of them, you might be wondering: Does Florida Blue cover Wegovy? The insurance company’s coverage for Wegovy (semaglutide) is quite limited, but it might be covered by some plans, including Medicare.

Read on to find out how to check if your Florida Blue plan covers Wegovy for weight loss — and how to save if it does not.

Florida Blue's Wegovy coverage is limited. As of April 2025, many individual or employer-sponsored Florida Blue plans do not cover Wegovy (or other GLP-1s) for weight loss. 

As of October 2026, some employer-funded Florida Blue plans may cover Wegovy, including Wegovy HD. Coverage depends on whether  your employer chooses weight loss coverage. These plans may use the NetResults formulary, which lists Wegovy as a covered drug, as long as prior authorization and quantity limit requirements are met. 

If you have a Medicare Part D plan with Florida Blue, both the Wegovy pill and pen are covered for weight loss under a temporary GLP-1 Bridge program that ends December 31, 2027.

Florida Blue commercial plans also do not cover Wegovy for heart disease or fatty liver disease, but Medicare Part D plans do.

Florida Blue coverage for Wegovy: rules and criteria 

Florida Blue coverage for Wegovy is extremely limited, and many employer-sponsored plans specifically exclude Wegovy from coverage. Here is a high-level look at the coverage rules and criteria for Wegovy on Florida Blue:

• Plan type: Most commercial Florida Blue plans do not cover Wegovy for weight loss, cardiovascular risk reduction, or fatty liver disease. Since April 2025, these plans mainly cover GLP-1s when prescribed for type 2 diabetes. However, if you have an employer-funded plan that uses the Florida Blue NetResults formulary, or a Medicare Part D plan with Florida Blue, Wegovy may be covered for all three conditions. 

• Covered indications: When Florida Blue covers Wegovy, you must be taking it for an FDA-approved condition, such as weight loss and management in people with obesity or overweight and a weight-related health condition, cardiovascular risk reduction in people with heart disease and obesity or overweight, or fatty liver disease.

• Prior authorization: When Wegovy is covered, prior authorization is usually required. Some plans also require step therapy, where you must try an older medication first before your plan will cover Wegovy. Step therapy is considered unsuccessful if the medication was not effective or produced intolerable side effects.

Prior authorization for Wegovy for weight loss

If your Florida Blue plan covers Wegovy under Medicare Part D, your prior authorization paperwork must show that you are taking the weight loss medication as part of a lifestyle program that includes diet and exercise. 

It must also document that you have a body mass index (BMI) of: 

• 35 or higher

• 30 or higher, and at least one of these conditions: heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease

• 27 or higher, and at least one of these conditions: prediabetes, history of heart attack or stroke, or peripheral artery disease

You are not eligible for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program if you:

• Already have GLP-1 medications covered through your Medicare Part D plan

• Have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease (your Part D plan might still cover a GLP-1 for these conditions separately)

Prior authorization requirements for Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction or fatty liver disease may vary depending on your Medicare Part D plan.

Here are four ways to check if your Florida Blue plan covers Wegovy:

1. Sign in to the member portal. Visit floridablue.com and sign in. Once you are there, navigate to My Plan, then Pharmacy, to see a list of all the medications covered by your plan. If Wegovy is not listed, it is not covered.

2. Use the Florida Blue mobile app. Once you have logged in, you will be able to see all the same information as on the Florida Blue website, including the list of covered medications.

3. Call the number on the back of your ID card. This number connects you directly with a Florida Blue representative, who can let you know whether your plan covers Wegovy and any coverage requirements.

If you have Medicare Part D through Florida Blue, Wegovy has a $50 copay when prescribed for weight loss under the GLP-1 Bridge program. When prescribed for cardiovascular risk reduction or fatty liver disease, the copay can vary based on your Part D plan. Most Florida Blue commercial plans do not cover Wegovy, but you can explore other ways to save such as manufacturer savings offers or self-pay pricing discounts.

Without insurance, Wegovy can cost upwards of $1,300 at a retail pharmacy. 3. Switch insurance plans. If you are set on taking Wegovy, you might consider switching to a different insurance plan that is more likely to cover it, such as Aetna, Cigna, or UnitedHealthcare. Confirm that a new plan covers Wegovy before you switch, since coverage for GLP-1s can change at any time.

Getting insurance coverage for Wegovy through Florida Blue can be a challenge. Here is what to remember:

• As of April 2025, most Florida Blue commercial plans don’t cover Wegovy for weight loss. Wegovy may be covered under some employer-funded plans that use Florida Blue’s NetResults formulary.
