Key takeaways

  • Most TRICARE plans cover Wegovy, including TRICARE Prime, Select, and premium-based plans, but TRICARE For Life does not.

  • TRICARE requires prior authorization for Wegovy based on your BMI, past weight loss efforts, and plan for lifestyle changes.

  • Wegovy can cost as little as $0 with TRICARE, depending on your military status and where you fill your prescription.

Does TRICARE cover Wegovy (semaglutide)? Yes, most TRICARE plans cover Wegovy, but not all do, and TRICARE requires prior authorization first. TRICARE is the US military’s healthcare program for active duty and retired service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and eligible family members.

Does TRICARE cover Wegovy?

Yes, most TRICARE plans cover Wegovy with prior authorization if you meet certain clinical criteria and have a prescription from a TRICARE network healthcare provider. TRICARE covers weight loss medications, including Wegovy injections or tablets, if you have one of the following Prime or Select plans, including several overseas plans:

  • TRICARE Prime Demo

  • TRICARE Prime Overseas

  • TRICARE Prime Remote

  • TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas

  • TRICARE Reserve Select

  • TRICARE Retired Reserve

  • TRICARE Select Overseas

  • TRICARE Young Adult Prime or Select

  • Continued Health Care Benefit Program

  • Uniformed Services Family Health Plan

While many TRICARE plans cover Wegovy, not all do. Notably, TRICARE For Life does not cover Wegovy. If you have TRICARE For Life, you may be able to get Wegovy through the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge by enrolling in Medicare Part D. The Bridge has a $50 monthly copay and runs through December 31, 2027. TRICARE also does not cover Wegovy for people who are only eligible for care at military hospitals and clinics, or for certain other groups.

TRICARE coverage for Wegovy: rules and criteria

Similar to other insurance plans that cover GLP-1s, TRICARE requires prior authorization for Wegovy. This means your healthcare provider must submit documentation showing that Wegovy is medically necessary for you before TRICARE approves coverage. For adults, your healthcare provider must show that you:

  • Have followed an eating plan and made lifestyle changes for at least six months without reaching your weight goals

  • Have not lost at least 5% of your body weight after three months of generic weight loss pills such as phentermine, unless a medical reason prevents you from taking them

  • Plan to continue making lifestyle changes, such as changes to your eating habits and exercise, while being treated with Wegovy

Do you need prior authorization for Wegovy on TRICARE?

Yes, TRICARE requires prior authorization for Wegovy. Your healthcare provider must submit a form before TRICARE will cover Wegovy. This form must show that you meet TRICARE’s clinical criteria, have tried lifestyle changes and generic weight loss pills, and will continue making lifestyle changes during treatment.

Once TRICARE approves your prior authorization, it lasts 12 months. To renew it, your healthcare provider must resubmit prior authorization each year and show that you have lost at least 5% of your starting body weight.

How to check if your TRICARE plan covers Wegovy

Here are two quick ways to check if your TRICARE plan covers Wegovy:

1. Call TRICARE. You can find the phone number for your plan on the TRICARE website.

2. Search your plan’s drug formulary. Visit the TRICARE Formulary Search on Express Scripts. In the “Medication” field, type in Wegovy, and select your sex and age. Then press Search to view your plan’s coverage for Wegovy.

How much does Wegovy cost?

How much Wegovy costs with TRICARE depends on whether your plan covers Wegovy, your military status, and where you fill your prescription. If your TRICARE plan covers Wegovy, here’s what you’ll pay in 2026 based on your military status:

  • Other TRICARE beneficiaries, such as retirees and family members, pay $0 at a military pharmacy that carries Wegovy. Otherwise, it costs $44 per fill through home delivery or $48 per fill at a retail network pharmacy.

Without insurance, Wegovy costs $1,349.02 per month at its list price, according to Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer. On Ro, you can get the Wegovy pill and Wegovy pen at lower cash prices: the Wegovy pill costs $149–$299 per month and the Wegovy pen costs 199–399 per month, depending on the dose.*

What to do if TRICARE won’t cover Wegovy

If your TRICARE plan doesn’t cover Wegovy, you still have options.

1. Pay cash for Wegovy. If TRICARE won’t cover Wegovy, you can pay the cash price for your prescription. On Ro, you can get Wegovy online for $149–$299 per month, depending on the dose and form.*

2. Use a pharmacy coupon for Wegovy. At a retail pharmacy, the cash price of Wegovy may be close to its $1,349.02 list price. However, you may be able to lower the price by using a pharmacy discount card from websites such as SingleCare and Optum Perks. Visit the website, search for Wegovy, and download the coupon for your preferred pharmacy.

3. If you have type 2 diabetes, ask about other GLP-1s. Even if your TRICARE plan doesn’t cover Wegovy, such as TRICARE For Life, it may cover other GLP-1s when prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes. For example, TRICARE covers both Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for type 2 diabetes, in most cases with prior authorization, but not for weight loss.

4. Consider other weight loss medications. If TRICARE denies Wegovy but your plan covers weight loss medications, you may qualify for another weight loss medication. TRICARE plans that cover Wegovy may also cover weight loss injections such as Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Saxenda (liraglutide), or pills such as Qsymia (phentermine/topiramate), phentermine, and Contrave (naltrexone/bupropion).

Bottom line

Getting Wegovy covered by insurance usually involves a few hurdles, and TRICARE is no different. If you have a plan that covers Wegovy and your healthcare provider submits prior authorization showing that you meet TRICARE’s coverage criteria, TRICARE may approve coverage. Here’s what to know about TRICARE and Wegovy:

  • Most TRICARE plans cover Wegovy, including TRICARE Prime, Select, and premium-based plans. TRICARE For Life does not cover Wegovy, but you may be able to get it through the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge if you enroll in Medicare Part D.

  • TRICARE requires prior authorization for Wegovy. Your healthcare provider’s form must show that you meet the BMI requirements, have tried lifestyle changes and generic weight loss pills, and plan to continue lifestyle changes. Approval lasts 12 months, and renewal requires losing at least 5% of your body weight.

  • You can check if your TRICARE plan covers Wegovy by calling TRICARE or searching your plan’s formulary online.

  • The cost of Wegovy with TRICARE can be as low as $0 for active duty service members and at military pharmacies. Without coverage, Wegovy has a list price of $1,349.02 per month, and Ro’s cash prices are $149–$399 per month, depending on the dose and form.*

  • If TRICARE won’t cover Wegovy, you can pay cash for your prescription, use a pharmacy coupon card, or ask your healthcare provider whether you qualify for another weight loss medication or a GLP-1 for type 2 diabetes.
