  • Depending on your eligibility, you may be able to get Wegovy for $25 or less per month with the Wegovy Savings Card from Novo Nordisk.

With a list price of $1,349.02 per month, the cost of Wegovy (semaglutide) can add up quickly. Luckily, there are ways to save, including a manufacturer savings card and pharmacy discounts. But how do you get Wegovy for $25, exactly? Three words: Wegovy Savings Card.

You may be able to get Wegovy for $25 (or less!) with the Wegovy Savings Card—that is, however, as long as you have a valid prescription for the drug, have private or commercial insurance, and meet the other eligibility requirements. Don’t fit the bill? While you may not be able to get medication for $25 on the dot as you would with the card, you can still save on your Rx with other cost-saving measures.

Wegovy may be prescribed to people with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. In 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Wegovy for another indication besides weight loss: to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in people with obesity or overweight and established heart disease.

Keep reading to learn about how to get Wegovy for $25 and additional ways to get the weight loss medication for less.

How much does Wegovy cost?

The list price of Wegovy is $1,349.02 for a 28-day supply, which includes four injection pens, each prefilled with a single dose of the medication. This breaks down to about $337.26 per week or $16,188.24 per year and is the same for all dosage strengths of the drug (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, 2.4 mg).

The list price of a medication describes the price set by the drug manufacturer and does not factor in any discounts, rebates, or insurance coverage. The amount you’ll end up paying for Wegovy will also depend on your preferred pharmacy, location, and specific insurance plan.

How do you get $25 Wegovy?

You can get Wegovy for $25 a month with the Wegovy Savings Card. This card, which is offered by drug manufacturer Novo Nordisk, is for individuals who have private or commercial (read: not government-funded) insurance and meet other eligibility requirements.

And while $25 for Wegovy is undoubtedly a great deal, especially since the drug can cost over $16,000 per year, you may even be able to get the medication for free—that is, again, depending on your eligibility. If you qualify, you may be able to get Wegovy for as little as $0 for a 28-day supply for up to 13 fills (just over one year of treatment). Then, after the 13th refill, you may pay as little as $25 for a month’s worth of Wegovy, which, again, includes four single-use injection pens. According to Novo Nordisk, this offer is effective as of January 2, 2024.

However, here’s the fine print when it comes to the manufacturer-offered savings program and card.

To get Wegovy for $25 or as little as $0 per month, you must:

  • Have private or employer-sponsored insurance with coverage for Wegovy

  • Have a valid prescription for the brand-name drug that includes a valid prescriber identification number (which is something of a no-brainer for any licensed, qualified healthcare provider)

The Wegovy Savings Card can only be used in the United States and is not transferable.

Unfortunately, you cannot get Wegovy at such a steep discount through the manufacturer savings program if you are:

  • Enrolled in a federal or state healthcare program with prescription drug coverage, including Medicaid, Medicare, Medigap, Tricare, and the Veterans Administration (VA)

  • Are eligible to have the entire cost of your prescription reimbursed by a commercial insurance plan or other commercial health or pharmacy benefit programs

  • Do not have insurance

If you have private or commercial insurance but your plan does not include coverage for Wegovy, you can still save up to $500 on a 28-day supply using the Wegovy Savings Card.

Still not sure if you qualify? You can determine your eligibility by visiting Novo Nordisk’s website. If you get the green light, you can then apply online—and that brings us to our next topic…

How to apply for $25

To apply for the Wegovy Savings Card, head over to the manufacturer’s website. Once there click “Get Savings and Support.” This should take you to a registration form that will ask if you have a Wegovy prescription, your insurance coverage, and some basic information about yourself.

Before applying, it’s good to review the saving card’s eligibility requirements:

  • Valid prescription for Wegovy

  • Private or commercial health insurance, excluding government-funded plans

  • Ineligible for other drug benefits

  • To be used in the US

  • Cannot be combined with a cash discount program or non-insurance savings plan

If eligible, you’ll be prompted to create an account where you can enter more details about your insurance coverage and learn the price you qualify for, which may be $25 (or even $0) a month. Your account will also give you access to a free health coach and hub to track your weight loss progress.

Other ways to lower the cost of Wegovy

If you’re not eligible for the Wegovy Savings Card or just looking for even more ways to save, you’re in luck, as there are a handful of tactics for lowering the price of your prescription.

Review insurance coverage

While insurance coverage varies depending on your specific health plan, many private and commercial insurers cover weight loss medications, such as Wegovy—if not in full, then at least partially. Once you have a prescription, you can then determine whether Wegovy is covered by your insurance, such as by using Ro’s GLP-1 Insurance Coverage Checker. All you have to do is fill out the form with the information on your insurance card; Ro will then send you a free, personalized coverage report based on their conversation with your insurance provider.

You can also check out your healthcare plan’s drug formulary, which is the list of all drugs covered under your plan. If Wegovy isn’t listed, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck paying at or around the list price. Your healthcare provider may be able to request prior authorization from the insurance company on the basis that Wegovy is medically necessary. Novo Nordisk offers a sample letter they can use here. Should that request be denied, your healthcare provider may also submit an appeal on your behalf.

That’s great and all, but what about if you have government-funded or subsidized insurance? Let’s discuss.

  • Medicare: In general, Medicare does not cover medicines for obesity management, but some Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans do. However, now that the FDA has approved Wegovy for an additional indication (lowering cardiovascular risk in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight), coverage may expand for Wegovy. According to a 2024 memo issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), reducing cardiovascular risk is considered a medically accepted indication, so individuals taking Wegovy for this specific reason may be able to receive coverage through Medicare Part D. If someone on Medicare has limited resources, they can get help with Medicare Part D copayments, deductibles, and coinsurances through the Medicare Extra Health program.

  • Medicaid: Medicaid drug coverage can vary by state. Similar to Medicare, drugs that treat obesity may not be covered. However, with the new FDA-approved indication for Wegovy as a treatment for reducing cardiovascular risk, coverage for Wegovy may expand. Your healthcare provider may need to submit prior authorization on your behalf.

  • Veterans Administration (VA): If you have prescription drug coverage through the VA, you may be able to get Wegovy covered under the MOVE! Weight Management Program. Talk to your local provider and consult the drug formulary to understand your options.

  • Tricare: Wegovy may be covered under Tricare. Your healthcare provider may need to submit a coverage review. Talk to your local provider to understand your options. Before fulfilling a Wegovy prescription, they’ll most likely need to submit a coverage review.

Sign up for a prescription discount program

In addition to working with your healthcare provider and insurance plan, you may be able to save more on Wegovy with a prescription discount card. These cards typically work as coupons at local pharmacies and can offer significant savings on prescription drugs.

Popular programs that offer discounts include:

  • RxSaver: Free service that offers coupons that help consumers save up to 80% on prescription drugs.

  • GoodRx: Free service that offers coupons for various medications.

  • WellRx: Free prescription discount program that offers up to 80% off select drugs at over 65,000 US pharmacies.

  • SingleCare: Free service that offers coupons for various medications.

  • Optum Perks: Free prescription discount program that offers up to 80% off select drugs at over 64,000 participating pharmacies in the US.

Consider alternative medications

While there isn’t a generic version of Wegovy, there are other medications that may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

One such example is Zepbound (tirzepatide), which is an injectable medication that, like Wegovy, is FDA-approved for weight loss and management. Then there are other semaglutide drugs, such as Ozempic and Rybelsus. While they’re both injections and can be used for weight loss, these potential Wegovy alternatives are indicated for type 2 diabetes. And, of course, there are also oral weight loss medications on the market, such as phentermine and Contrave. These medications work in different ways and have their own risks and benefits, so if you are considering them talk to your healthcare provider.  Keep in mind, though, that many options for weight loss can also be quite costly and are not necessarily covered by insurance.

If you and your healthcare provider determine it might be worth trying another drug, your next step would be to call your insurance company to see if the potential swap is included in the plan’s drug formulary. If it is, the representative should be able to explain more about the medication’s cost based on your specific plan. You can also explore savings options, such as manufacturer offerings (e.g. Ozempic Savings Card) and discount programs, to determine how much you’ll pay for alternate treatment.

In addition to the aforementioned options, there’s another that might be even more cost-effective, especially if you’re paying out-of-pocket: compounded semaglutide. Compounded medications are custom-made pharmaceuticals by licensed pharmacists to meet the needs of a patient when a commercially available drug cannot. Permitted (but not approved) by the FDA, they can also be a good option if there’s a drug shortage or you’re dealing with insurance denial. Typically, insurance won’t cover these medications, but their direct costs tend to be lower than those for brand-name counterparts. Ro, for example, offers compounded semaglutide starting at $194 for the first month and then $399 monthly for those who qualify. (FYI, prices include both the Body membership and medication.)

Bottom line: how do you get Wegovy for $25?

Unfortunately, prescription medications can cost a pretty penny, and Wegovy is no exception. But you may be able to get Wegovy for $25 or less. How, exactly? Let’s recap.

  • Yes, you can really get Wegovy for $25 if you meet certain criteria. Offered by Novo Nordisk, the Wegovy Savings Card awards qualified individuals the opportunity to get the medication for $25 per month (i.e. 28-day supply). To be eligible, you must have private or commercial insurance, a valid prescription for Wegovy, and meet other requirements.

  • If you qualify for the Wegovy Savings Card, you may be able to get Wegovy for even less—specifically for as little as $0 per month for up to 13 fills (just over one year of treatment). After the 13th refill, you may pay as little as $25 for a month’s worth of Wegovy, which includes four single-use injection pens.

  • Those who are uninsured, enrolled in a government healthcare program (e.g. Medicare), or covered by commercial insurance reimbursement are ineligible for the manufacturer coupon for Wegovy. Sound like you? You may be able to take advantage of other savings strategies. One example is prescription discount cards, which you can retrieve through free services and programs like GoodRx and Optum Perks and use at participating pharmacies. You may also want to discuss alternative medications with your healthcare provider. There are other injections for weight loss, such as Zepbound, as well as oral drugs like phentermine. Though not typically covered by insurance, compounded semaglutide tends to cost less out-of-pocket.
