If you’re considering taking Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight loss or heart health, you’re probably wondering how much the medication costs. Like many newer medications, Wegovy isn’t cheap. Without insurance, Wegovy can cost over $1,500 at the pharmacy—and that’s for just a one-month supply.

So yes, Wegovy is expensive, but Wegovy coupons can significantly bring down the cost of your monthly prescription. Read on as we explain what Wegovy coupons are available, how they work, and more.

What is a Wegovy coupon?

A Wegovy coupon describes a savings offer that allows you to get a discounted price for Wegovy, if you qualify. Wegovy coupons include the official Wegovy Savings Card from Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy, as well as pharmacy-specific coupons offered by websites such as GoodRx, SingleCare, and Optum Perks.

The official Wegovy Savings Card can bring the cost of a 28-day supply of Wegovy down to $0 for people with commercial drug coverage for Wegovy, or $650 for people who are uninsured, pay cash for their prescriptions, or have a commercial health plan without coverage for Wegovy. That’s more than half-off the average retail price of Wegovy.

The pharmacy-specific coupons offered by drug discount sites lower the price of Wegovy by $144–465, on average. The savings can differ depending on the pharmacy and the drug discount site.

Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy Savings Card program

Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy, offers an official Wegovy Savings Card program. With this offer, you may be able to get Wegovy for free, depending on your insurance coverage. While the drugmaker may change their savings offers at any time, here are the current details:

  • If you have commercial insurance with coverage for Wegovy, the Wegovy Savings Card brings the cost of a 28-day supply down to as low as $0. The card works for up to 13 refills. After your 13th fill, you can still use the Wegovy Savings Card, but the price of Wegovy will be as low as $25 per month, not $0. The maximum savings allowed with the card are $225 for a 28-day supply, $450 for a 56-day supply, and $675 for an 84-day supply. After the 13th fill, these maximum savings lower to $200, $400, and $600, respectively.

  • If you are uninsured, pay cash for your prescriptions, or have commercial insurance that doesn’t include coverage for Wegovy, the Wegovy Savings Card may bring the cost of a 28-day supply to $650.

Only people with commercial drug insurance, such as an employer-sponsored health plan, are eligible for the Wegovy Savings Card. It cannot be used by people with state, federal, or government-funded health insurance, such as Medicaid, Medicare, Medigap, VA, DOD, or TRICARE.

“Manufacturers often offer two versions of savings cards—one for patients whose insurance covers the medication and another for those whose insurance does not,” says Dave Knapp,

Founder of On the Pen, a community education website about GLP-1s. “Patients without insurance coverage for the drug often receive a higher dollar amount in assistance but may still pay more out-of-pocket overall.”

To check your eligibility and enroll for the Wegovy Savings offer, visit the NovoCare website.

Wegovy coupon from drug discount sites

If you don’t qualify for the Wegovy Savings Card or you want to shop around to see if you can find Wegovy for cheaper, many drug discount websites offer Wegovy coupons for specific pharmacies. Depending on the pharmacy and the discount site, these Wegovy coupons can help you save $144–465 off the retail price of Wegovy, which equates to 9–26% off.

Then, type in your zip code, select your prescribed dosage strength of Wegovy, and download the coupon for your preferred pharmacy. You can also text or email the coupon to yourself. Then, when you go to fill your prescription, show the Wegovy coupon to your pharmacist to receive the discounted price.

Here’s a bit more information about each drug discount site and the savings they offer.

  • GoodRx coupons work at over 70,000 pharmacies nationwide. With a GoodRx coupon for Wegovy, you can save between $201–465, or 13–26%, off the cost of your prescription, depending on the pharmacy.

  • SingleCare coupons work at over 35,000 pharmacies nationwide. With a SingleCare coupon for Wegovy, you can save between $198–447, or 12–25%, off the cost of your prescription, depending on the pharmacy.

  • Optum Perks coupons work at over 64,000 pharmacies nationwide. With a Optum Perks coupon for Wegovy, you can save between $231–468, or 14–26%, off the cost of your prescription, depending on the pharmacy.

  • BuzzRx coupons work at over 60,000 pharmacies nationwide. With a BuzzRx coupon for Wegovy, you can save between $176–379, or 11–21%, off the cost of your prescription, depending on the pharmacy.

  • WellRx coupons work at over 65,000 pharmacies nationwide. With a WellRx coupon for Wegovy, you can save between $144–461, or 9–26%, off the cost of your prescription, depending on the pharmacy.

These coupons cannot be used with any insurance, including Medicaid or Medicare. You can use them instead of insurance when paying cash for your prescription.

Is there a Wegovy coupon for Medicaid?

There is not a Wegovy coupon for Medicaid. Also, the official Wegovy Savings Card and the pharmacy-specific coupons we discussed above cannot be combined with Medicaid if you use insurance. If you are not using your Medicaid (for example, it doesn’t cover it) you can use the drug discount programs, such as GoodRx.  If you have Medicaid, contact your state Medicaid agency to find out if Wegovy is covered, and how much you can expect to pay for Wegovy.

“Medicaid coverage varies by state—some states include these drugs for obesity treatment, while others don’t,” says Dr. Katy Dubinsky, PharmD, Founder & CEO at VitalizeMed. At the time of writing, 14 states cover GLP-1 medications for obesity, according to an analysis shared with Reuters. These states include:

  • California

  • Connecticut

  • Delaware

  • Kansas

  • Massachusetts

  • Michigan

  • Minnesota

  • Mississippi

  • New Hampshire

  • North Carolina

  • Pennsylvania

  • Rhode Island

  • Virginia

  • Wisconsin

Each state gets to decide what drugs to include in their Medicaid program. Medicaid coverage for Wegovy may depend on whether you are taking it for weight loss or cardiovascular risk reduction. Unlike Medicare, Medicaid can cover weight loss drugs, services, and even surgery—but again, the coverage will vary depending by state.

Is there a Wegovy coupon for Medicare?

No, there is not a Wegovy coupon for Medicare. Also, people who have Medicare are not eligible to use the official Wegovy Savings Card from Novo Nordisk. Pharmacy-specific coupons, such as those offered by sites like GoodRx or Optum Perks, cannot be combined with Medicare. So, if you have Medicare, you may want to check how much you’ll have to pay for Wegovy to see if you can get a better price using a Wegovy coupon from a site like GoodRx. You can review your plan’s drug formulary to find out if Wegovy is covered.

Currently, Medicare is legally prohibited from covering weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic. However, now that Wegovy is also approved to help prevent serious cardiovascular problems (such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart-related deaths) in people with obesity and heart disease (as of early 2024), Medicare will cover Wegovy when it is prescribed for cardiovascular health. So, if you are prescribed Wegovy for weight management, and you do not have a diagnosis of heart disease, Wegovy will not be covered.

“Medicare coverage for GLP-1 medications is currently very limited unless you have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes,” says Knapp. “For example, Ozempic (Novo Nordisk’s version of semaglutide for type 2 diabetes) is widely covered, while Wegovy (Novo Nordisk’s version of semaglutide for chronic weight management) is only approved under specific Medicare plans for patients with obesity plus heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.”

How do I pay $25 on Wegovy?

To get Wegovy for $25, you’ll need to use the Wegovy Savings Card from Novo Nordisk. This offer is only available to people with commercial drug insurance, such as an employer-sponsored health plan. People whose plans include coverage for Wegovy can get Wegovy for as low as $0 a month for the first 13 fills, and $25 a month afterward. If your plan does not include coverage for Wegovy, the price of a 28-day supply is capped at $650.

How much is Wegovy without a coupon?

Without a coupon, Wegovy costs between $1,600–1,800, according to GoodRx. How much you pay for Wegovy can depend on your insurance coverage and the pharmacy you use. Among those with insurance, about 80% pay less than $25 for Wegovy each month, according to a 2023 Novo Nordisk earnings call.

Can you use a Wegovy coupon with insurance?

It depends on the coupon. If you have commercial drug insurance, even if it does not include coverage for Wegovy, you may be eligible for the Wegovy Savings Card offered by Novo Nordisk. This Wegovy coupon can lower the price of a 28-day supply to $0 for those with coverage for Wegovy, and to $650 for those with commercial insurance but without coverage for Wegovy (as well as those who are uninsured or pay cash for their prescriptions). After the first 13 fills, the cost is $25 for those with coverage for Wegovy (the $650 price doesn’t change).

If you plan to use a Wegovy coupon from a website like BuzzRx or SingleCare, those can only be used in lieu of insurance. Check if you can get a better price for Wegovy if you use your insurance plan. If not, you can use the coupon to pay for your refill instead.

“Always review the specific terms of the discount program or coupon for details,” says Dubinsky. “Manufacturer coupons can sometimes be used alongside private insurance but cannot be combined with Medicaid or Medicare due to federal regulations.”

Who can take Wegovy?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Wegovy for weight loss and cardiovascular risk reduction. If your health insurance covers Wegovy, you’ll probably need to show that you meet the approved FDA indications. That means that if you are taking Wegovy for weight loss and weight maintenance, you must have obesity (defined as a body mass index, or BMI of 30 or higher) or you must have overweight (defined as a BMI of 27 or higher) and a weight-related health condition, such as high cholesterol. Wegoy is also FDA-approved for weight loss and chronic weight management in children ages 12 years and older with obesity. If you are taking Wegovy to lower your cardiovascular risk, you must have established heart disease and obesity or overweight.

Some people should not take Wegovy, including people with a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers, and anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is compounded semaglutide cheaper than Wegovy?

If your insurance doesn’t cover Wegovy, compounded semaglutide can be a more affordable option. Typically, compounded semaglutide costs several hundred dollars less than Wegovy. For example, Ro offers compounded semaglutide for $254 monthly, plus a $145 monthly membership fee for the Ro Body program, which includes:

  • A prescription for a GLP-1 medication such as Wegovy (if appropriate)

  • Unlimited messaging with your healthcare provider

  • Concierge insurance support

  • Personalized health coaching

Compounded semaglutide contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy, semaglutide, but it is made by specialized compounding pharmacies as opposed to Novo Nordisk. Compounded pharmacies must meet FDA and state requirements, but they do not undergo the same FDA approval and review for safety and effectiveness.

What to ask your doctor about Wegovy coupons

You can also ask your healthcare provider about additional ways to save on Wegovy. Here’s a list of questions you may want to bring to your appointment:

  • How long do I need to take Wegovy?

  • Is Wegovy the most cost-effective weight loss medication for me?

  • Should I consider any Wegovy alternatives instead?

  • Am I eligible for any Wegovy savings programs or discount offers?

  • Do you have any free samples of Wegovy?

  • Would a two- or three month supply of Wegovy be more affordable than a one-month supply?

  • What other options do I have if I can’t afford Wegovy (or if I have trouble finding it in stock)?

  • If my insurance doesn’t cover Wegovy, is there another medication I can take to lose weight or lower my cardiovascular risk?

Bottom line

  • Wegovy is expensive without insurance. The retail price of Wegovy ranges from $1,590 to $1,781 for a 28-day supply. Pharmacy coupons and the Wegovy Savings Card can make the medication more affordable.

  • The Wegovy Savings Card offers substantial discounts for people with commercial drug insurance. Novo Nordisk’s official Wegovy Savings Card can significantly lower the cost of Wegovy for those with commercial drug coverage for Wegovy, lowering the price to as low as $0 for the first 13 fills and $25 thereafter. Uninsured patients or those without coverage for Wegovy may pay $650 with the Savings Card.

  • Eligibility for the Savings Card is limited. Only individuals with commercial insurance are eligible for the Wegovy Savings Card. Those who use Medicaid, Medicare, and other government-funded insurance programs are not eligible.

  • Drug discount sites provide pharmacy-specific savings. Websites like GoodRx, SingleCare, and Optum Perks offer discounts of 9–26% off the retail price of Wegovy, depending on the pharmacy. These coupons can help you save hundreds of dollars on Wegovy, but they cannot be combined with insurance.

  • Compounded semaglutide can be a cheaper alternative to Wegovy. If your insurance doesn’t cover Wegovy, compounded semaglutide can be a more affordable option. Although it is not FDA-approved like Wegovy, it can cost several hundred dollars less while offering the same active ingredient.
